The Robin and Roosevelt Virtual Scholar!
Stick with me on this one, and don't judge me before I'm through with explaining!.......Before I came over here I spent a weekend with some relatives who are into "Geocaching". In a nut shell, it's treasure hunting with GPS (Global Positioning)! Now, to my fellow bar flies this might not sound like something that I'd usually take much interest in, and in fact, many of you might right now be preparing to have serious words with me when I get home, some might also be planning to hurt me............ BUT, truth be known it's a good laugh...........so there!
So, having enjoyed my first Geocaching experience I came up with an idea to help to raise the profile of the Nottingham Roosevelt Memorial Travelling Scholarship over here in the States.
I've set up the Robin and Roosevelt "Travel Bug", who's mission will be to act as a virtual scholar and travel the USA as far and wide as possible until the year 2046 - the 100th anniversary of the Nottingham Roosevelt Memorial Travelling Scholarship!
In the Goecaching world "Travel Bugs" are small identity tagged items who have the purpose of travelling from Geocache to Geocache. The finder of a Travel Bug takes it home, types in the identity tag number into the Geocaching website online, and is then presented with information about the purpose of the Travel Bug. The finder then deposits the Travel Bug in the next Geocache that they find and so the bug travels around.
Finders of the Robin and Roosevelt Travel Bug will be taken to its own web page, where they'll learn about the scholarship. I've also included on there web references to our visitnottingham.co.uk web pages. The hope is that they will learn a little bit about Nottingham.
You'll see on the right hand side of this page that I've included a link to the Robin and Roosevelt Travel Bug page which will let you see where the bug has travelled to. I've also included a link on there for you to learn a little bit more about Geocaching as well - so go and have a look!
I met up with a whole bunch of Geocache enthusiasts in downtown Chicago at the weekend, and one of them, Paul, kindly agreed to take the Robin and Roosevelt travel bug off me and start it on it's travels (Thanks Paul!) - turns out though that Paul took it to an event over here in Chicago, where somebody quite important in the world of Geocaching took a liking to it!
Jeremy Irish is President and Co-founder of "Groundspeak", the company that administers Geocaching.com. Geocaching is growing rapidly with over 330,000 caches worldwide so Jeremy's started something fairly big in setting this company up!
Anyway, he took the Robin and Roosevelt travel bug off Paul's hands when Paul explained to him what it's purpose was. Jeremy has taken it with him back to the Groundspeak headquarters where he will then send it on its way. We'll have to wait and see where it turns up next.
The photo above is of Paul (left) handing the Robin and Roosevelt Travel bug over to Jeremy Irish.
The travel bug itself is a small diecast metal Robin Hood figure, with a badge of the Nottingham City crest attached to it. You can't really see it in the picture though so I'll try and get somebody who finds it to send me a close up of it.

Ahhh, orienteering with a SatNav device. I knew my TomTom would come in handy for something other than sending me the wrong way down a one way street in the middle of rush hour!

Hello Matt,
Questions to be answered...
Does Robin prefer geocaching to riding through the glen? Does he still use a bow and arrow? Martyn says does he like a quiver?(he promises me this is something to do with archery)
How times have changed for Robin but not me!
Martyn is considering attaching a label to me and sending me all over the world!!!If he asks you to make the necessary arrangements can you send me somewhere nice?
Love me and a potential geocacher!!!

Hi Janet
Mum tells me that you're quite proud of yourself for managing to post comments on here! I'm going to guess that the majority of the content comes from Martyn though......owing to the level of humour.
Webbo - Yes, I make a mean cup of tea and I'm damn good at drinking it!........(keep it down mate, you're giving me a bad reputation!
Ellmore - leave your TomTom out of this!
Nice to hear from you again, I'll be in touch over the next few days, probab;y beforeI head up into the mountains.

Got to be quick because the Sherrif & his nasty men are getting real close.
The band of men decided we needed to head south a bit. It has got real cold but the trees are so tall here you can hardly see any sky!
Kevin Costasnots been babbling on about moving up into the trees and building lots of rope bridges and treehouses. I ask you... we are men o' the wood we don't need to act like little kids playing games in the trees, this is real life wot we are living ere in Nottingham.
Oh he makes me so cross sometimes!
You know the other night we caught Costasnot dancing with foxes! Wierd or what, next thing we know he will be saying he wants to go native and be a real peasant!! Got word that I am being tracked all over the place, the sheriff has got some new bloke called Virgil Skuller who is going to be moving around the woods sending back reports on my whereabouts.
Thats why I have to be sneaking around so much. Managed to sneak into a pub in disguise the other day, it was the "Fat Snake", bit of a dive but got some real lively locals. Got into a conversation with a couple of peasants called Cashew and Jack. Now that Jack could drink, the pints never touched the sides. Then he started going on about his sailing days and the Working Mens Crusades. Reckoned he was one of the Knights Tumbler and was on the hunt for the holy of holies... yea Real Ale!!! I left pretty sharpish when Jack said Cashew was nuts hanging around Nottingham and should get out and see the world... somewhere like Macademia!
Marion's gone a bit silly recently, she went to see a wandering minstrel, Sir Rich of The Cliff, perform in an Arena in Wembley. He is pants so there was no way me an the merry men were going. We sneaked in to the arena and saw the Boss instead, he even sang a song about my John Henry and my other mate Old Foggy who went courting.
Got a whisper that some peasant woman had taken a shot at the Sheriff but missed and was nearly deleted herself. If she gets the chance she should try again... I wonder if she drives a cart as well as she shoots?
Thinking about making a break for the mountains to try and shake of the Virtual Skuller. Will give you an update when we make it to my old mates Maria & the Von Trapps. It's gonna be dangerous and we will have to be careful where we tread cause the hills are alive with Moose sick.
Got to go, the pain's killing me, I've got the crampons as it does you no good laughing at your own stupid jokes.
Marion's lost the plot and asked me who I am supposed to be.... it's me the real Robin!

Hey man what's with all the verbal abuse!
Have some respect you are communicating with a real Leg End.
As for the lot calling themselves Me, they need to be careful mentioning my riding through the Glen! The Von Trapps want to know if there is "a problem with my rear" as I am not used to being on a horse!
Put that bit in the quote marks to make sure you got the oh so clever joke!

You Geek.
Have sent you email, long boring email, typical from a girl. Enjoy my love and the photo. Sky is the way forward. Missing you as Nunny's never here, but I'm not complaining cos the house smells more girlie and there is always toilet paper.
