Made it....

Providence - 41°49'26.00"N 71°24'48.00"W

I'm sat in a Starbucks in Providence........I think I should have bought something to be using the internet, but I haven't, so don't tell anybody!

I've been here 2 days now. I landed at JFK on Wednesday afternoon and after a cab ride across New York to Penn station I caught a train here to Providence. I've been staying with a lady called Elizabeth, courtesy of the SERVAS scheme. She and her room-mates have kindly put me up for a few days. They're a nice bunch and have made me feel really welcome. In fact, just to the left of me right now there's a copy of the Providence Journal and on the front page is a story written by Elizabeth. She's a newspaper reporter and she's covering the state mid term elections that are taking place on Tuesday. I got a brief lesson in the American political system from Elizabeth and her colleague Scot when I arrived Wednesday evening. All I can say is that it's complicated to understand!

Yesterday (Thursday) was spent at the University of Rhode Island. It took me an hour to get there on the bus (and an hour back funnily enough), but it's a really nice university. It's pretty much in the middle of nowhere - cows, fields, hay-barns etc - but the department and staff that I met with gave me some really useful information. This morning has been spent at Brown university (41°49'34.30"N 71°24'8.98"W) which is a completely different world! I saw at least 2 Van Wilder Golf buggy's (you'll know what I mean if you've seen the film) on what is an amazing campus. Again, the staff that I met with there were great and so far the work side of the scholarship is going really well so far!!

This afternoon I'm meeting Haven Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt's grandson. He and his wife Bunny have kindly agreed to put me up at their place in Dartmouth Massachusetts for the weekend. He's driving over here to pick me up and bringing me back to Providence on Sunday morning for me to catch a train back to New York before heading off to Buffalo for the next leg of the trip.

Buffalo's a bit of a worry though!!........a couple of people that have asked where I"m off to next have smiled at me rather strangely when I mentioned Buffalo! "Cold" seems to be the main adjective being used............in fact the bloke that I bought a mobile phone off yesterday told me that they've had 3 feet of snow over the last couple of weeks up there. Triffic!

Anyway, I'd better get off this machine now before the weird guy in the Starbucks apron over there comes over and tries to make me buy a Latte.

Next post will probably be up on Monday once I've got to Buffalo and built my igloo!

  • Thanks very much!

Mum, Janet and any other halfwits that are struggling with the Global Earth stuff - It's simple!

Just copy the coordinates that are in the posts on the blog into the "Fly to" box in the top left corner of Google Earth. The map will then take you to those coordinates. It's not difficult!

If the Sheriff is reading this.......hi!

  • You seem to be stuck in that Starbucks for such a long time!
Hope You got to Buffalo and it was not so cold with all that snow. Have you tried their Mozzarella yet?
Oh what the heck I give up I cannot keep up this sensible blog stuff and have the urge to write something a little bit funny!
Before I do how come you deleted my last message!
Well it appears I and the band of merry men are mirroring your trip so here is an update from the WALSUMSINSHERWOOD splogbot.
Well we finally made it but it took 2 days. It's a lot further than you think from the Royal Oak to the Spreading Chestnut Tree. Just about recovered from the jet lag and it was a relief to stop off at that famous hot beverage chain 'Mattspee' for a cup of the old Earl Grey.
The merry men decided we needed to get political and we got into a major debate about Climate change and being environmentally friendly. The result is that the whole band of merry men voted unanimously to go Green!
We got some news about Friar Tuck, it appears he has been diagnosed with Dyslexia which explains why he always refused to sign his name!
We spent some time looking for Filberts and have ended up with a whole load of unnecessary plastic objects.
The newest recruit to the band, Bill Indigo, has spent most of his time on the Lute composing a song. He has not got past the first few lines.. "Everything I do I do it for you..." The tune's catchy & Kevin Costasnot reckons that it could be a big hit but Bill would need to get a catchier stage name. The lads have suggested Scarlet Willy but it just doesn't have the right ring to it.
Maid Marion thinks this communicating on the 'hairnet' is miles better than messenger arrows and carrier pigeon.
Got to go as the Sheriff's on my tail.
Hurry up and give us your next installment and tell us all about your visit with the Roosevelts. We also need the co-ordinates so we can see where exactly you are 'coz we have no idea where Buffalo is in the US.
